To Whom I’ve Not Met

This is for you—
The sky was grey when I woke up, but I smiled anyway. My blankets were warm and soft, and I hugged them close and thought of you. You were the first person I talked to today. I regaled you with long exposition about the posters on my wall and the books on my shelf, the clothes in my dresser and the rug on my floor, the cards and trinkets and other paraphernalia I had collected which all seemed important to share. I chewed my gum in class and wondered if you liked peppermint, wintergreen or cinnamon more. When you tell me about your grandfather’s cottage I think—
It would be nice to meet you there.
